Met Life recently announced their intention to exit the Long Term Care Insurance business for NEW customers beginning in 2011.  All existing Met Life Long Term Care policyholders will be able to keep their policies as long as they continue to pay their premiums.

Long Term Care has been a very difficult product for Insurance Companies to price.  Insurance companies’ primary assumptions on interest rates, mortality, morbidity and retention have not been in line with actual results.  This caused some carriers to exit the business and others to be forced to take rate increases on their products.

Met Life was one of the largest providers of Long Term Care insurance in the United States, especially in the group market.  Some of the notable remaining carriers are Genworth, John Hancock, Prudential and Mutual of Omaha.

Keep in mind that December 31st, 2008 is the deadline to complete partnership training if you wish to sell Long Term Care Insurance in the state of Pennsylvania.  Beginning January 1st, 2009, you will not be able to sell LTCi without having completed the 8 CE Credit Hour class.

John Hancock is sponsoring the following training classes:

  • November 11th – Wilkes Barre, PA
  • November 12th – State College, PA
  • November 13th – East Norriton, PA

The cost is $65 payable by credit card.  You may be eligible for a refund by submitting 2 applications within 60 days of training.  Continental breakfast and lunch will be served.  All meetings run from 8am to 5pm.  Lunch speaker is Dave Roberts, Regional Director of John Hancock.

The Washington Post /Kiplinger’s Personal Finance (8/17, F3, Lankford) reported, “John Hancock, one of the largest long-term-care insurers, plans to raise rates on existing policyholders for the first time ever.” The company “is filing for a rate increase on long-term-care policies sold in the 1990s and on some newer New York State Partnership policies” at an average of “$21 per month ($252 per year).” The rate increase is expected to “affect about 275,000 people, or about one-fourth of the company’s long-term-care customers.” While “[p]remiums will rise 13 percent on policies originally issued by John Hancock,” they will “jump 18 percent on policies the company took over from Fortis in 2000.” According to Kiplinger, the rate increase is “because John Hancock anticipated more people would drop their long-term-care coverage before collecting benefits.” Meanwhile, Kiplinger recommends “hold[ing] on to [the] policy,” despite the increase, since “[m]ost long-term-care insurers have raised rates for new buyers the past few years.”
