The Special Election being held in Massachusetts this coming Tuesday could have a big impact on whether Health Care Reform (in it’s current form) makes it to the President’s desk any time soon. MA State Senator and Republican Nominee, Scott Brown is running neck and neck with Martha Coakley, the current MA State Attorney General and the Democratic Nominee. The US Senate seat is currently held by an interim Senator (Paul Kirk) who took over for Ted Kennedy who died from Brain Cancer some months ago.
Brown has positioned himself as the 41st vote in the Senate to break the Super-Majority now enjoyed by the Democratic party in the Senate. He wants to see Health Care Reform go back on the drawing board and opposes the current version. His message has been surprisingly well received in the Bay State which hasn’t elected a Republican to the Senate since 1972. Coakley enjoyed a 30 point lead in polls taken just 2 months ago, but is now in a virtual dead heat. Coakley has indicated she would vote for the current Health Care Reform Bill.
The race has attracted national attention and even drew a campaign visit from President Obama on Sunday to stump for Coakley. The election will be held on Tuesday, January 19th. The seat will go back up for re-election again in 2012.
